Caroline Kennedy in the race, says a source close to her decision

The latest news on the Caroline Kennedy front is - she is in the contest, and there's no quitting it! Kennedy is one of the frontrunners for the New York Senate seat vacated by the confirmed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; the same seat that her slain uncle, Robert F. Kennedy, held from 1965 through 1968!

Wednesday morning, the New York Times, New York Post and the Associate Press reported the "shocker" about Kennedy decision to withdraw, after her month-long bid to succeed Clinton. Later, a source close to Kennedy's decision said that, after a slight wavering, Kennedy was resolute in winning the appointment.

The news of Kennedy's withdrawal came as a shock to supporters and to Governor Paterson, who looked like appointing her by Saturday.

Though the AP corrected its story about Kennedy's withdrawal, saying that the source who gave the information said it was a mistake, the Times and Post offered no comment on their stories. While Times said Kennedy had withdrawn out of due to her uncle, Edward Kennedy's illness; the Post said she pulled out as she got to know Paterson had decided against her!

Caroline Kennedy's political decision initially garnered popular support, which somewhat waned after her short upstate tour and early press interactions. Her reluctance to answer questions, and her lack of knowledge of New York and its issues invoked criticism. She was mocked for her repeated use of "you know" and "um" in interviews, and was called an unexciting campaigner.
