More than 125 products have been recalled by the US FDA due to salmonella outbreak including cookies, ice creams and pet food. The number is expected to increase after the completion of the investigations.
The recalled products contain peanut paste or peanut butter manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America, Georgia. PCA products are sold to more than 70 institutions and food companies. But the company does not sell its products to individual customers.
After the recall of snacks by General Mills, Kroger Co and Safeway Inc., it was the turn of NutriSystem Inc. granola bars and seven dog biscuit products of PetSmart Inc which were also found to be tainted with salmonella strain of bacteria .
Meanwhile PCA has stopped the production of the tainted peanut butter as investigations had revealed it to be the only source of the outbreak.
More than 480 people in 43 states have been reported to be affected by the outbreak. 90 people had to be hospitalized and six lost their lives. More cases of infections are expected in the coming days.
An alert has also been sounded in Canada by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. It has warned Canadians against the consumption of snacks containing peanut butter. The CFIA's has warned against peanut butter snacks by Hebert's Fully Loaded, Nature's Path Organic Optimum, Clif Bar and Lärabar.
