The Defence Department of the Obama government announces the selling plan of a $60 billion worth aircraft armament package to the Gulf in order to realize security efforts overseas.
The deal with Saudi Arabia is the most capacious weapon deal, the US has ever concluded, including Joint Direct Attack Munitions, or JDAMs also known as one-ton bombs.
The gain of the new arms would strengthen Saudi Arabia’s bombing capabilities. Tunnels and bunkers that assumingly are located in Iran to hide nuclear projects could thus be targeted.
The deal implies that Saudi Arabia purchases approximately 84 F-15s that would add to Sausi Arabia’s current amount of 70 F-15s. Also modern war aircraft such as attack helicopters belong to the armament package.
The aerospace industry analyst at the Teal Group in Fairfax, Richard Aboulafia interprets the US government’s motivation to accomplish the deal: "When you sell combat aircraft you're also selling a strategic relationship. It is a symbolic commitment to consult on common defense issues, and when you operate the same equipment, that often means joint training and an ongoing military relationship."
Experts do not expect that the Congress intends to block the deal although critics complain that a country with bad human rights conditions will be strengthened and supported through it.
