Wi-Fi Direct technology - a potential Bluetooth killer!
Wi-Fi Direct technology

Linking digital device will apparently become a lot easier in the near future, as the non-profit Wi-Fi Alliance – including members like Apple, Intel, Cisco and other leading tech vendors - Monday started certifying products as Wi-Fi Certified Wi-Fi Direct.

The beginning of the certification of as Wi-Fi Certified Wi-Fi Direct marks the arrival of Wi-Fi Direct - an emerging technology that is expected to meet the ever-growing demand for simple, portable wireless network connectivity.

Being developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance, the Wi-Fi Direct technology basically makes of the traditional WiFi technology for enabling devices to connect speedily, seamlessly and securely.

Technically speaking, Wi-Fi Direct enlists a technology called “Soft AP”, which, in a nutshell, is software-based access point functionality built into Wi-Fi Direct certified devices; thereby allowing these devices to route and direct network traffic just like access points and routers.

As such, since Wi-Fi Direct is essentially a peer-to-peer wireless networking, it allows devices like notebooks, tablets, cameras, and printers to “find” one another and establish wireless connectivity, sans the requirement of a wireless router, an access point, or a hotspot.

In fact, Wi-Fi Direct is being described as a Bluetooth killer, as it has the potential to replace Bluetooth. In addition, the technology has several other applications and capabilities over and above that of the Bluetooth; and it delivers a better connection as well as has greater range than Bluetooth.
