According to a survey conducted by Health Canada, the number of Albertans who smoke, is on the decline. Anti smoking advocates are demanding a further increase in tobacco tax. According to them, this would further bring down the numbers.
Action on Smoking and Health, a group advocating anti smoking says that the strict anti smoking laws implemented in the province have led to the reduction in the number of smokers.
Les Hagen, executive director of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) said, "Less than one in five Albertans are current smokers compared with one in three who were smokers just 20 years ago. We believe that the new Tobacco Reduction Act is largely responsible for the latest reduction in tobacco use."
Health advocates feel low cost of tobacco combined with marketing tactics such as candy-flavored smokes account for the high numbers of youth who smoke. Teen smoking is disturbingly high in Alberta and this is a cause of concern.
