Facebook edges out Myspace; becomes top social networking site

It’s not Myspace, but Facebook that leads in the social networking arena now; that’s what the well known online researcher ComScore Inc. says.

ComScore’s research reveals that Facebook edged out longtime leader in social networking, MySpace.com in the number of visitors that it recorded in December. It says that Facebook registered almost double the number of global visitors in December than MySpace.

According to ComScore, almost 222 million unique visitors visited Facebook last month, while MySpace received 125 million visitors.

That means Palo Alto-based Facebook grew a dramatic 127 percent in the past year, and thus, it has become top ranking social networking site worldwide. It is now the 7th most popular internet asset in the world.

Andrew Lipsman, director of industry analysis at comScore, says, "The trend isn't new in terms of Facebook's phenomenal growth. It's doubled its number of visitors in the past year."

However, Facebook should not forget that MySpace is still leader as far as American visitors are concerned – Facebook gets about 55 million American users every month, while MySpace gets 75.9 million a month.
