Verizon launches its VOIP-based desktop phone - the Verizon Hub

It will let you make unlimited calls to the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico for a monthly $34.99 service fee; well, that's what Verizon Wireless is touting about its newly launched the Verizon Hub.

The Verizon Hub, a VOIP-based, Linux-powered home phone, was launched by Verizon Wireless on Friday. The desktop phone, the Verizon Hub has a large touch-screen display. Having OpenPeak's OpenFrame design, the 8-inch Verizon Hub has 800x480 touch screen display. It comes with a single DECT 6.0 cordless phone that snaps into the base.

Once you plug the Verizon Hub into your home broadband line, the phone can do wonders. It not only lets you make calls, but also works as your family calendar, limited Web browser, weather indicator, messaging center, and a digital picture frame. Its screen shows details about missed calls and visual voice mail. The Verizon Hub can help you do lot more; you can stream movie trailers and other video from V CAST; you can send directions to phones using VZ Navigator; you can track kids' cell phones using Chaperone; you can view local traffic information; and you can send and receive text, picture, and video messages. The best thing about the Verizon Hub is that it can work on any internet connection.

Commenting on the Verizon Hub, VP and chief marketing officer at Verizon Wireless, Mike Lanman said, "The Verizon Hub is going to change the way you think about what you want and need your home phone to do. Whether you're thinking about getting rid of your home phone or can't live without it, now is the time to try out the Verizon Hub."

You will be able to get the Verizon Hub after Feb. 1 for $199.99 after a mail-in rebate. The company says that it will also provide additional handsets for adjoining rooms, but hasn't yet announce price for that.
