According to the latest statistics shared by comScore on November 3, the year's third quarter witnessed Samsung dominating the US mobile phone market, with the Samsung handsets clearly outselling the handsets of the rival companies.
The comScore data revealed that, on the basis of sheer volume, Samsung retained its position as the leading handset manufacturer, grabbing 23.5 percent of the US cell phone market; thereby marking a 0.7 points quarter-over-quarter increase.
Samsung was followed by LG in the second place, with a 21.1 percent market share; while Motorola, RIM, and Nokia followed thereafter with their respective market shares of 18.4 percent, 9.3 percent and 7.4 percent.
The comScore report also showed that the penetration rate of smartphones in the US cell phone market increased to 25 percent during the third quarter; as compared to their 15 percent penetration in the second quarter.
Meanwhile, in terms of smartphone operating systems, Research in Motion (RIM)'s BlackBerry OS remained the top pick, followed by the Apple iOS, and the Google Android OS.
Going by comScore statistics, market leader BlackBerry OS had a 37.3 percent market share during the third quarter; while Apple's iOS had a 24.3 percent share, and the Android platform had a 14.9 percent share of the market.
Meanwhile, Microsoft - whose updated Windows Phone 7 OS will hit the US on November 8 - witnessed a 2.8 percent quarter-over-quarter fall in its OS market share, and tumbled down to 10 percent.
