Fast-spreading ‘Conficker’ infects millions in Asia and Latin America

Your computer security is in danger - says the warning issued by the security experts. Yes, security experts have warned that a malicious worm is spreading quickly across a number of corporate networks worldwide. The worm exploited a critical Windows flaw and infected millions of PCs worldwide.

According to security experts, the fast-spreading computer worm has adversely affected the computer networks in Asia and Latin America. The worm has infected between 6 million and 9 million PCs worldwide. The worm has been named as "Conficker" or "Downadup".

Symantec has reported that, China and Argentina are the most severely hit by "Conficker" or "Downadup". Started its infectious operation about 2 months ago, Conficker has infected millions over the past few weeks.

Alfred Huger, vice president of Symantec Security Response articulated that the worm is responsible for 29 percent of the infections in China and 11 percent infections in Argentina.

Huger said, "We're not seeing anywhere near the number of infections in Western Europe and North America." 'Its infection rates in the U. S. are closer to the 1 percent level,' Huger said.

China, Brazil, Russia and Argentina are countries the worst hit by the worm, said Phil Porras, the program director at SRI International.

Conficker or Downadup, like other malware, poses bundle of threats and attacks in several ways. It replicates and spread throughout a network, for which it depends on several attack vectors. Conficker spreads by accessing administrative passwords on a network and by infecting USB devices connected to computers. According to the security experts, the worm replicates at very high speed, that's what makes this worm unique.

Security researcher for TippingPoint's DVLabs Team, Derek Brown said, "The notion of using multiple attack vectors, that in and of itself is not terribly new. The unique thing about this is the speed at which it has spread and I think that's a result of the size of the [Microsoft] vulnerability. That was a pretty big one."

Security experts say Conficker malware came into being because of Microsoft vulnerability. Conficker's first variant made its appearance in November 2008.
