Google apparently going high fashion with shopping rollout

The invites that Google has sent for its press event on Wednesday, November 17, at 8 p. m. ET, have led to speculations galore that the bigwig Internet search engine is apparently launching an ecommerce site ‘with shop in shops by major designers,’ as “Frockwriter” Patty Huntington’s blog post put it.

With the invite for the invitation indicating that Google is teaming up with the fashion industry, Huntington wrote in the blog post: “Our sources say that the new Google fashion initiative is called Boutiques. com and boasts not only online boutiques selling merchandise offered by various designers and retailers, but a large number of curated “boutiques” selling the looks worn by celebrities and other influencers.”

The Frockwriter story that Google will be populating the boutique. com domain with a visual clothing search engine is probably based on the conjecturing that the company intends to apply its earlier-this-year acquired Like. com visual search assets to help consumers purchase the attire that they see online and in person.

Noting that Google has been making efforts to revamp its shopping product for some time, Huntington also revealed that the participating American designers - at least 19 – include Prabal Gurung and Oscar de la Renta; while the retailers having joined Google include Shopbop, Nêt-à-Porter, Nordstrom, Bluefly, and Selfridge.

Furthermore, the featured celebrities include Lady Gaga, Emma Watson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Victoria Beckham, Anna Wintour, Rachel Zoe, and also Michelle Obama.
