Chrysler urges dealers to accept cost cuts, order vehicles

Banking on its dealers for its swift restructuring, Chrysler LLC has urged then to accept cost cuts and order vehicles. At stake is Chrysler's reputation of being a viable automaker, which would help it seek additional aid from the government.

Considered the weakest of the three automakers in Detroit, Chrysler availed a $4 billion federal aid in December, and is seeking an additional aid loan of $3 billion.

The automaker is trying its best to seek concessions from all stakeholders - which include creditors as well as the United Auto Workers union. Moreover, Chrysler's alliance with Fiat was unveiled last week, whereby Chrysler will get access to Fiat's small car platforms and the Italian automaker will get a 35 percent stake in the company.

With a March 31 deadline to meet for proving its viability to the government, Chrysler has offered the dealers a .5% reduction in profit margins on the sales of its vehicles. The company will also relinquish a yearly increase in the amount they are reimbursed for labor to perform warranty repairs. The pre-sale payment for dealers to fill up gas tanks of cars and trucks will also be stopped by the company.

After meeting with dealers at the National Automobile Dealers Association in New Orleans, Jim Press, the Vice Chairman of Chrysler, said on Sunday: "Dealers understand the need for all parties to put some skin in the game. They realize they can all help us save some money."
