The tussle between Oracle and SAP turned out to be a hardy battle of words, as both the companies argued over the copyright infringement damages that SAP should pay the California based Company. The difference in the estimate for damages by the two companies had come out to be extremely different as Oracle felt that SAP should pay it an estimated $1.7 billion.
However, SAP refuted the amount stated by Oracle as it felt that it should pay Oracle only the damages that Oracle had suffered because of the infringement. The method used by SAP only estimated the compensation amount to be around $40 million.
The two sides had a feisty argument, however, Judge Phyllis J. Hamilton while talking down assertively stated that she would not interfere in the judgment and would allow the 8 member jury to decide the method they felt was the most justified. The legal battle between the two is regarding the illegal use of Oracle's applications like PeopleSoft, JD Edwards and Siebel by a subsidiary of SAP, known as Tomorrow Now.
While talking about the money that SAP owed Oracle, Co-President of the IT Company, Safra Catz stated that the German Company, SAP in reality owed Oracle billions of dollars for the infringement, as intellectual property in the IT world was in actual worth that amount of money.
