Some of the Cornwall’s most remote areas will get super-fast fibre-optic broadband by the end of March, thanks to BT’s £132 million project.
Broadband provider BT has named eight Cornish communities that will be the first to get benefited from its upcoming pilot scheme that will bring speeds of up to 100Mbps.
As per estimates, more than 10,000 households and businesses will have access to some of the world’s fastest broadband speeds.
Nigel Ashcroft, the director of next generation broadband for Cornwall Development Company, welcomed the development.
Speaking on the topic, Ashcroft said, "This is an incredibly innovative and pioneering project never before done on this scale."
The pilot scheme, which has received around £53 million from European regional Development fund, has an aim to deliver super-fast fibre-optic broadband to 80 per cent to 90 per cent of households and businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by the end of 2014.
The European Union is encouraging its member states to offer citizens with a minimum of 30Mbps broadband by the year of 2020.
The £132 million project is expected to create 4,000 new jobs, along with protecting an additional 2,000.
