According to reports, Apple and News Corp are likely to launch a new ‘tablets-only’ newspaper, the Daily, on December 9 – an event which might also witness the introduction of the much-awaited subscriptions for the iPad.
Going by a report by Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, Apple will probably announce subscriptions through iTunes; thereby enabling customers to receive automatically-delivered newspapers and magazines to their iPad tablets.
Apple’s decision to roll subscriptions through the App Store is a welcome move, given the fact that iPad users currently have to download and pay for digital issues of a publication one by one. Not only is this process somewhat inconvenient, it also gives the publishers no information about the consumers; thereby making them incapable of targeting the users for advertising and marketing purposes.
What may differentiate the Daily from the other digital editions will apparently be the tabets-only epaper’s user interface, design, and the level of social interaction – especially given the fact that almost 60-70 percent of current iPad editions lacking the level of interactivity and refinement that the tablet is capable of offering.
In addition, for the Daily, News Corp has hired some interesting journalists and good writers to attract the iPad users. Furthermore, with their cost-to-market being quite low, News Corp can also afford to aggressively promote the Daily.
