The "trojan horse" malware, which was first reported in the unauthorized versions of Apple iWork '09 last week, has been found hanging around Adobe Photoshop CS4.
Intego, the Mac-oriented security software manufacturer, on Monday, cautioned the Mac users that it has found a variant of the iWorkServices Trojan malware, which was discovered last week, which has infected about 5,000 Macs as of Jan. 25. Intego warned that the pirated copies of Adobe Photoshop CS4 may carry a variant of the "trojan horse" malware.
Intego reported that the malware termed as OSX. Trojan. iServices. B is found on the copies of Adobe Photoshop that the pirate software sites are distributing. The security software maker said, "OSX. Trojan. iServices. B Trojan horse is found bundled with copies of Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Mac. The actual Photoshop installer is clean, but the Trojan horse is found in a crack application that serializes the program."
Intego stated that the new Mac Trojan variant, similar to the previous version of the malware, spreads thru file-sharing sites, like BitTorrent trackers and other sites having links to pirated software.
In an oline post, Intego said, "This new Trojan horse, OSX. Trojan. iServices. B, like the previous version, is found in pirated software distributed via BitTorrent trackers and other sites containing links to pirated software."
According to Security experts, once a system is infected with the Trojan malware, it enables hackers to remotely control the infected system - the hackers can steal sensitive or financial information or access users' accounts for identity theft purposes.
Intego said, "The risk of infection is serious, due to the number of infected users, and these users may face extremely serious consequences if their Macs are accessible to malicious users."
Intego advised the Mac users to install and run security software to protect themselves from the malware. In order to keep themselves safe, the security software maker advised that the Mac users should get their software legitimately and through trusted sources.
