The layoff tracker has yet another addition - this time from News Corp.'s digital division, Fox Interactive Media (FIM)! Nearly 100 jobs are being slashed by FIM, across its business units like MySpace, Photobucket, Rotten Tomatoes, Scout Media, and corporate.
The announced cuts comprise nearly 5 percent of the domestic US workforce of FIM, and almost 3 percent of its worldwide workforce of 2,900.
According to reports, the cuts began over the last month. FIM spokesman Dani Dudeck confirmed to the Wall Street Journal about the job-cuts Monday, saying that quite a few groups within the digital division were eliminating jobs.
The biggest of the proposed cuts, 22 layoffs out of the total 100, will be at the company's Photobucket unit. Another substantial portion of the cuts will be absorbed by the corporate offices.
FIM's MySpace, the largest social networking site which has 1,600 employees, was "still hiring," as per spokeswoman Dudeck.
In a statement, Dudeck said: "We are constantly aligning our business and resources to focus on the core strategic initiatives of MySpace. We currently have open positions, are actively hiring in areas including but not limited to MySpace Music, Business Development, and other product initiatives."
In December, Chris Dewolfe, CEO MySpace, sounded quite optimistic about prospects for the social networking business. By a video conference from Los Angeles, he had told the Reuters Media Summit that revenue and profits at MySpace are significant, and are expected to grow despite the economic downturn.
