Yahoo posts Q4 loss of $303 million

It was like a disappointing welcome to the new CEO of Yahoo, Carol Bartz, when the company posted a loss of $303 million, revealing its Q4 earnings on Tuesday.

Announcing its fourth-quarter loss yesterday, the Silicon Valley Company stated that the company's results are not as bad as the Wall Street analysts were predicting.

Sunnyvale, California based Yahoo reported that it lost $303 million, or 22 cents per share. The company stated that it lost due to "costs to cover layoffs and bum investments". The company claimed that its Non-GAAP net income for Q4 was $238 million, or 17 cents/share, and its revenue dropped 1.4%, to $1.81 billion, from a year ago.

According to Yahoo, it gained $205.7 million, or 15 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. If they weren't vexed by restructuring charges this quarter, the company would have gained 17 cents per share.

Yahoo also revealed the full-year results for 2008. It reported that its revenue was $2.209 billion, up 3% over 2007's $6.969 billion, and its net income was $424 million, working out to 29 cents/share, down from 2007's $440 million (47 cents/share).

Yet, the company stated that their results are "better-than-expected". Well aware of all those risks before she took the job, the new CEO, Carol Bartz said, "This is a fantastic internet property and it doesn't deserve everyone trying to kick at it and pull it apart. This is not a company that deserves to be pulled apart and left for the chickens." Ruling out selling assets of Yahoo, she said, "I didn't come here to sell the company."

It is important to note that when Bartz took over Yahoo was facing with a 10% workforce reduction, and Google was domineering in the ongoing online ad market.

Yahoo forecasted that its revenue for the current quarter will range from $1.53 billion to $1.73 billion, which will be down from the revenue of $1.82 billion in the first quarter of 2008. However, the company did not project its earnings for the first quarter.
