Shipping company FedEx said on Friday that a shipment of radioactive rods which went missing Thanksgiving Day has been found at one of the company's shipping stations in Knoxville, Tennessee. The shipment, which was lost in transit, was sent from a hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
Noting that the package contained a radioactive rod used in CT scans - which use X-rays for creating images of patients' bodies -, experts said that even though its misplacement posed hardly any threat to public, it nonetheless highlights the need to track low-hazard materials that have the potential to be used in small-scale terrorist attacks.
According to FedEx spokeswoman Sandra Munoz, the radioactive rods, which were reported missing at their destination in Tennessee, contained little energy and a low concentration of radiation.
Munoz further added that the shipment containing the rods was found on Friday afternoon at a FedEx station in Knoxville, without any shipping label on the outer box. The FedEx employees opened the unlabeled container which revealed the metal cylinder that remained closed.
Adding that the FedEx is "trying to track down how the package became detached from the original shipment," the spokeswoman also said that all of the rods were intact, and that none of the FedEx employees had been exposed to radiation.
