According to a study from Sainsbury’s Finance, nearly 70 percent of Britons use their credit cards on a regular basis for shopping online; and spend an average of almost £200 per month.
More specifically, the Sainsbury’s Finance study found that on an average Britons spend £192 per month to make Internet purchases; though almost 1.2 million people – comprising 4 percent of cardholders - spend over £1,000 a month online on their credit cards, while two-thirds spend less than £100 a month.
Furthermore, people in the 35-44 age-group reportedly put the most Internet spending on their credit cards, with their typical monthly online spending being nearly £214.
Noting that the study revealed that “only 7 percent of credit card holders do not use their cards online,” Stuart McKeggie, head of cards at Sainsbury’s Finance, said: “The growth of online shopping in such a short time is staggering.”
The study also found that the most common things to be bought online using credit cards include: music and DVDs, which 38 percent people purchasing these items during the last one year; followed by books, which were bought by 37 percent people; and clothes and holidays, by 36 percent each.
Nearly 30 percent of the online shoppers, who use credit cards, buy electrical or white goods over the Internet; while 27 percent pay for entertainment, like cinema or theatre tickets; and 25 percent purchase groceries online.
