MTV's 'The Hills' reality TV couple Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, had a beautiful wedding ceremony at a chapel near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, complete with rings, wedding dress and handwritten vows, officiated over by a minister. However, the wedding though symbolic, is not legally binding, since the couple did not obtain a marriage license or take part in a civil ceremony, required by Mexican law to make the union official.
While, couples can register their marriages ten days after the ceremony, the state of California does not recognize marriage ceremonies outside the United States , though they can petition a court later for legal recognition. If, an American wishes to get married in Mexico , they must bear in mind that only civil, non-religious Mexican marriages are valid internationally. A five day process, health certificates have to be obtained, including blood test results from a local doctor; and official translations of legal documents like birth certificates provided, before one can get legally married in Mexico .
People close to the couple i. e. their friends and relatives, including Heidi's sister and father, were pretty upset at not being invited to the wedding. Us Weekly that featured photo spreads of the wedding ceremony; reports the on-the-spur of the moment decision was made while drinking margaritas on the beach, and an hour later, the couple were exchanging vows.
Currently, filming Montag and Pratt in Mexico on vacation, 'The Hills' executive producer says future episodes of MTV's reality show will also feature the couple's wedding and honeymoon. And, while their marriage may not be legal in the US , the couple insists, once back in the States, they will be legalizing their union.
