According to the 2010 third-quarter Broadband Tariff Benchmarks from broadband analysis firm Point Topic, Hong Kong’s broadband connection offers the customers the best value for money, in the whole world.
The Point Topic study, which analyzed the amount of money the consumer pays for a megabit of bandwidth in one year, found that in Hong Kong that was merely $0.028 per Mb. As per the analysis, Japan stood in the second spot with $0.048 per Mb; and Romania bagged the third place with $0.163 per Mb.
Rounding up the top five positions, in terms of providing customers the ‘best value for money’ broadband, were Sweden in the fourth spot with $0.182 per Mb; and Latvia in fifth place with $0.241 per Mb.
Surprisingly, UK ranked rather low on Point Topic’s Broadband Tariff Benchmarks, sitting in the 24th position with an average cost of $0.912 per Mb. The US fared even worse, and sat in the 30th place with $1.315 charges per Mb.
While South Africa, Kenya and Indonesia were the three other countries over the $100 per Mb mark; Peru was the bottom ranker with a rather staggering cost of $209 per Mb.
Commenting on the findings, Fiona Vanier, Point Topic’s senior analyst, said: “Consumers in different countries are faced with very different broadband tariffs, dependent on geography, market and network maturity, local competition and various levels and sources of subsidy.”
