Cholera outbreak in Haiti has infected almost 81,000 people, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told the General Assembly on Friday.
He even speculated an increase in the number of people to be infected in next few months. He said that almost 650,000 people are expected to be affected with the disease in another six months.
Mr. Ban also said that a lot of medical assistance is required to treat the patients, who are severely affected. As the number of cholera victims could be doubled, an urgent requirement of medical personnel or staff is demanded.
WHO and Pan-American officials estimated a need of nearly 350 doctors apart from 300 medical staff that has already been approved by Cuba.
Almost 1,900 people have lost their lives in less than six weeks and more than 84,000 people have been infected with it.
It is believed that voodoo religion has affected Haitian culture. Large numbers of Haitians follow this religion and are suspected to spread the infection deliberately.
Prosecutor Kesner Numa said: "These people are accused of witchcraft related to cholera. It is really believed that witches are taking advantage of the cholera epidemic to kill".
Haitians are still fighting to overcome a lot of problems after the earthquake that killed 250,000 people and left more than one million homeless.
