In order to provide passengers comfort having allergy, WestJet Airlines in collaboration with King Pharmaceuticals will launch EpiPen Auto-Injectors onto WestJet's 91 aircrafts around the Christmas time.
As speculated, the pen will be placed in all WestJet aircrafts within the first few months of 2011 so as to treat severe allergic reactions.
Each flight will have two pens - one for adults and the other for children. The one for adults contains 0.3 mg of epinephrine and that for children has 0.15 mg of epinephrine.
Robert Palmer, WestJet spokesman said, "You never want to have a guest suffering. Incidents are extremely rare but it's a precaution more than anything else".
He added that there were already supplied syringes and vials of epinephrine on the aircrafts before the introduction of EpiPen, but the pen would prove as more efficient and effective treatment.
Adding to this, he said that safety was the foremost priority to them. This was the reason peanuts were never offered at the airline as some passengers could be allergic to it.
As for now, there is no information that if the staff would be provided training to use the EpiPen Auto-Injectors, but the passengers with severe allergies will be asked to keep with them their medication.
