According to the most recent figures shared by the telecoms watchdog Ofcom, the number of online silver surfers – most of them pensioners, in the 65-74 years age group – is apparently on the rise in the UK.
Going by the statistics forwarded by Ofcom, while there was a three percentage point growth in broadband take-up in the UK, from the last year figures; the number of ‘65-74 year old’ online surfers increased nine percentage points among, and those of the ‘over 75 years’ increased eight percent.
Ofcom, which published an all-embracing overview of the telecoms industry, also revealed that one in every 10 of the ‘65 to 75 year old’ online surfers got a broadband connection last year; with the figures being slightly lower for the first-time Internet users over 75 years.
In addition, Ofcom also specified that tech-savvy Brits are looking for speedier connections; with merely 15 percent of adults not planning to install broadband Internet over the next one-year period.
Ofcom also noted that even though the number of complaints has fallen 20 percent to nearly 100,000, an increasing number of users are still dissatisfied because actual broadband speeds are lower than those advertised, and because the complaints are apparently not handled effectively.
Ofcom said: “There has been an increase in consumer dissatisfaction with broadband speeds - from 14 percent 2009 in to 19 percent in 2010.”
