iSuppli has revealed that manufacturing cost of Research In Motion, the first touch screen Blackberry is much more than its contemporaries in the market.
It costs $30 more to manufacture BlackBerry Storm as compared to Apple Inc's iPhone 3G, according to an analysis by technology research firm iSuppli Corp. The report also stated that has a materials and manufacturing cost of $202.89.
The most expensive part of the Storm is the $35 Qualcomm chip. Qualcomm chip supports GSM and CDMA network and hence can be available in more countries. iPhone is currently only available for GSM networks.
The iSuppli breakdown does not represent the full cost of the device as it doesn't include costs incurred on research, marketing, distribution, and other factors. Such cost differences begin to add up when the shipment volumes increase. Verizon is the exclusive U. S. carrier of the Storm, and it sells the smartphone for $199 after a rebate and a two-year contract. AT&T is the exclusive carrier of the iPhone 3G, and it costs $199 with a new two-year contract.
iPhone and Storm have similar features when it comes to a large touch screen, messaging and multimedia facilities but the major difference between the two lies in the input method. iPhone utilizes a capacitive touch screen whereas Storm uses SurePress technology.
