Democrats are seeking a limitation in pay for workers of the companies that have received federal aid for bail out.
Meanwhile the White House is planning an action against "irresponsible" bonuses for executives offered by the companies that had received federal bailout. Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri introduced legislation that would limit the bailout amount to such companies to $400,000. Another proposal is to create a court that would have power to restrain executive compensation.
McCaskill, made an intense speech on the Senate floor saying that an average of $2.6 million dollars had been paid in bonuses to executives by the first 116 banks that received the bailout money from the TARP rescue plan. “We have a bunch of idiots on Wall Street that are kicking sand in the face of the American taxpayer” by taking multimillion-dollar bonuses, McCaskill said.
President Obama’s spokesman also revealed about the president's upcoming plan for financial stability which would also take into account executive compensation and bonuses.
Meanwhile President Obama has labeled bonuses, given the current situation, as "shameful."
Companies are giving bonuses after accepting funds from the $700 billion taxpayer bailout by Congress last year. The Treasury Department has already pumped in about $200 billion into banks across the country through its Troubled Asset Relief Program.
