Abbott Recalls Diabetes Measuring Strips
Abbott Laboratories

Forty-three lots of MediSense Optium Blood Glucose Test Strips by Abbott are being recalled as they have been found to provide inaccurate readings. The recall of this blood monitoring device is being overseen by the Health Sciences Authority.

According to available information, the test strips can carry out blood tests to check the blood glucose level of patients suffering from diabetes. The defected pieces were found to be giving imprecise measurements of the sugar levels in people.

The issue with inaccurate calculations was that people who were using the strips for measuring their sugar levels were not able to keep a check on the blood glucose, which could have risked their lives.

Abbott has informed that the possible reason behind the device malfunctioning was because the strips were taking more than the usual time to absorb the blood, which resulted in the faulty readings. The defected resulted in the blood sugar levels being calculated to much lower than they really were.

The affected lots include 50-test strips each and it has yet not been informed about how many such test strips were in the global market. Abbott has also announced that the recall will be finished in the next one week.
