BSkyB Deal: Poll confirms Public demand for independent investigation

An opinion poll has revealed that the public is demanding an independent inquiry into the proposed takeover of BSkyB by media firm called News Corporation, run by tycoon Rupert Murdoch.

ICM carried out a survey for an alliance of media organizations. According to this survey, 63 percent demanded an investigation into bid, which would allow News Corp to take over full control of the broadcaster.

Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Secretary, then proposed the idea of referring this to the Competition Commission.

Poll also revealed that three quarters of the British public wanted independent, competing sources of news in the United Kingdom. Five percent of people supported the takeover while another 44 percent went against it and 52 percent either opted out of the poll or did not know.

84 percent people were holding the belief that no single organization should have the right to control too much of the news media.

Competition Commission said, "The public's concern that no one organization should control too much of the news - as News Corporation would under the planned deal - is also very striking."

A spokesman for the alliance confirmed that a clear majority of the public is in the favor of an independent investigation into News Corporation's bid to acquire BSkyB.
