A recently conducted survey by a charity known as, The Prince’s Trust reported that the numbers of youngsters in Wales suffering from mental illnesses were on a constant rise. The main culprit behind this ever increasing problem has been stated to be unemployment.
The most common mental problems that have been effecting the youth include depression, anxiety attacks and suicidal tendencies. It was also found that apart from suffering from mental health conditions, the youth was also facing the challenge of sleep disorders, with insomnia being the most common condition.
The study was financed by the Macquarie Group Foundation and was conducted by YouGov. The survey has been titled as, The Prince’s Trust Macquarie Youth Index, which interviewed and assessed
2,170-people from the age of 16-years old to 25-years old. This is the third such research that has been compiled by the children’s charity.
Talking about the findings of the survey, the Director for The Prince’s Trust in Cymru, Rick Libbey said that unemployment has been rampant in Wales and that the country has suffered as a whole, with youth being the worst hit. The study also claimed, that almost half of the youth said that joblessness had caused them to suffer from anxiety attacks and to conflict self injury.
It needs to be remembered that unemployment in the country at the moment is at its highest since the year 1992 and is currently at 943,000, after it witnessed an increase of 28,000 in the third quarter of the year 2010.
