Friday, Galliker Dairy Co. of Richland Township, issued a voluntary recall of two ice cream products i. e. Rocky Road Ice Cream and Sundae Nut Cones, revealing they could contain salmonella-tainted peanuts. Sold in Pennsylvania and West Virginia , the product code dates are 008-08, 086-08 and 176-08.
The ice-cream producer says the recall was made after the Peanut Corp. of America expanded its recall to include all peanuts and peanut-related products from its Blakely, Ga., plant from January 2007 to present.
Galliker's chief operating officer Mark Duray stresses only two of the recalled products have been affected by the peanut issue, and the rest of its' frozen goods containing peanut products are safe for consumption.
Noting: 'If, there could have been a good time to have this happen, this is probably it. At least this isn't ice cream season, so there's not a lot of it out in stores', Duray said Galliker cones were not produced on site, but were made and packaged for the company by Garber Ice Cream of Winchester, Va. And while, the rocky road flavour was produced on site, it was packaged only for institutional sales, which means it's not on grocery store shelves.
Clarifying that all of the company's machinery was sanitized daily, leaving no chance for cross contamination, Duray also mentioned that all customers had been contacted and all ice-cream will be retrieved and destroyed, with Galliker offering substitutes to affected customers.
As well, Turkey Hill in Lancaster County, another Pennsylvania dairy, is also recalling six flavours due to the salmonella problem, namely, Tin Roof Sundae Premium, Chocolate Nutty Moose Tracks Stuff'd, Chocolate Nutty Moose Tracks Light Recipe, Nutty Caramel Caribou Frozen Yogurt, Peanut Brittle No Sugar Added Recipe and Peanut Butter Mania Light Recipe.
Consumers with questions can call Galliker at (800) 477-6455, ext. 239, or Turkey Hill at (800) 693-2479.
With peanuts and peanut products appearing in many foods, from egg rolls and ice cream to chili, candy and chocolate, the government is warning consumers to check foods containing peanuts and peanut products against a list of recalled products, available at www. fda. gov.
National jarred peanut butter brands sold directly to consumers and Girl Scout Cookies remain unaffected by the recalls, however, as a result of the expanded recall, NutriSystem Inc., a provider of weight management products and services, is also voluntarily recalling its NutriSystem-branded Peanut Butter Granola Bar.
