Two sisters from the state of Mississippi, who are currently serving life sentences for an armed robbery that they had committed almost two-decades ago in the year 1993, would finally be able to breathe fresh air. Apparently, the Governor of Mississippi Haley Barbour has suspended their sentences for an indefinite period of time.
The two sisters are Jamie and Gladys Scott, who were sentenced to this harsh term for a robbery that only made them richer by $11. Prior to the latest turn of events, the sisters would have been eligible for parole only after the year 2014.
It needs to be noted here that advocates from all over the country had protested against their jail term, as many felt that it was too harsh. The two will leave for Florida, and would be reunited with their mother and children there. Jamie is currently 38-years old, while Gladys is 35.
Talking about their release, Commissioner of the Department of Corrections, Mississippi, Chris Epps informed that such releases can take around 45-days. The decision announced by Governor Barbour has come after there had been strong protests by the mother of the two women, attorneys, NAACP and many other volunteers.
It needs to be remembered that in September earlier this year, hundreds of people had gathered at the state Capitol in a protest to show their support towards the two.
