Skydiver safe after instructor suffers midair heart attack

A novice skydiver who was attempting sky diving for the first time, had a miraculous escape as his 49–year old instructor died of mid air heart attack. The skydiver who is an active US military member managed to steer himself to safety and landed safely.

Both were attempting tandem jump, a type of skydiving  in which the student and the instructor are attached to the same parachute. The instructors are strapped to the backs of their students.

It was during the final moments of the jump that the instructor George C. Chip Steele of Sumter S.C. became unresponsive. However after landing safely, the sky diver did try to revive his instructor but it was too late.

The Chester County coroner’s office gave this account from the surviving jumper “A few minutes out of the jump, he said something to Chip, and he didn’t answer. And he said something again and he didn’t answer.”

Chester also credited the sky diver for maintaining composure in crucial moments. However, he did not disclose the sky diver’s  name.
