Several Baby Boomers are not Informed of Alzheimer’s Symptoms

A national survey has found that there are a number of baby boomers in British Columbia who don't even know about a single early symptom of Alzheimer's disease, which is indeed surprising.

The survey carried out by Alzheimer Society of B. C was conducted online on more than 1,000 people of Canada aged 45 to 65 in last year, but the release of findings was delayed to January 2011, in order to coincide with the whole month of Alzheimer's disease awareness campaign.

The early signs of Alzheimer's are memory loss, communication problems, change in personality, mood swings, poor judgment, problem in carrying out daily tasks, bewilderment and loss of initiative.

It was found that one in four people were not acquainted with even single sign of the disease and around half of the surveyed people recognized memory loss as the symptom of Alzheimer's. A small proportion of people could identify other symptoms of the disorder.

There were 1,006 respondents aged 45-65 were not ready to tackle the problem of Alzheimer's. Even though, a third of those who surveyed had been affected with the disorder but they didn't have much information about the same.

Mary Schulz, Director of education at the Alzheimer Society of Canada, "With more than 500,000 Canadians living with Alzheimer's and related dementias, and that number expected to double within 20 years education should be the key component of a strategy".
