PrimeSense joins forces with Asus to bring motion-controlled interface to PCs

According to a recent announcement by the privately-held Israeli firm PrimeSense, the company is joining forces with PC- and peripheral-maker Asus to bring a motion-controlled interface to PCs.

PrimeSense said that the PC-specific motion-controlled device, dubbed `Wavi Xtion', will be unveiled at this week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. In addition, PrimeSense - the company that licensed core Kinect technology to Microsoft - said that the Wavi Xtion will bring the motion-control advantage to the PC; quite like the Nintendo's Wii, Microsoft's Kinect, and Sony's Move.

As per an elaboration by PrimeSense, the Wavi Xtion gets the `Xtion' part of its name from the company's own 3D capture technology called the Xtion, which has been amalgamated with a transmitter/receiver called WAVI - short for `Wireless Audio & Video Interaction system.'

The Wavi Xtion's motion-control interface will not be limited only to gaming, but will also facilitate browsing and accessing content on the PC. In addition, there will also be APIs for third-party developers, as well as a Wavi Xtion store where developers can put up their motion-controlled apps for sale.

PrimeSense has given a 2011 second quarter timeline for the launch of the Wavi Xtion; though there has been no official disclosure about the pricing of the device. Nonetheless, it is being assumed that the price-tag of the device will be fairly akin to the $150 pricing of the Microsoft Kinect motion-sensing peripheral.
