Listeria contamination in Enoki mushrooms

Enoki mushrooms produced by Phillips Mushroom Farms, Pennsylvania have been recalled due to listeria contamination.

A specific lot of mushrooms bearing UPC 3338367540 sold between January 13th and January 30th, 2009 have been recalled due to suspected Listeria contamination. The recall covers 3.5-ounce packages of enoki mushrooms packed in clear plastic bags with blue or green graphics.

The company has revealed that the mushrooms were distributed under different brand names. Retailers have been instructed to remove the mushrooms from their shelves till further instructions.

Consumers have also been offered full refund for the mushrooms which are suspected to be contaminated. Initial test results confirm listeria contamination but no report of sickness has been received.

Enoki mushrooms, which are long, thin white mushrooms are considered as gourmet mushrooms. They are expensive simply because they grow at the snow line in the mountains and are often used in Asian cuisines.

Listeria causes flu like symptoms that include fever and muscle aches. The patients sometimes also show gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
