Day one of CES is in progress but yesterday both Microsoft and Sony called for press conferences for showing off some of their consumer electronics-related lineup. One has to read on to know about the opinion of Game Spot editors regarding both conferences, the continuing mixing up of entertainment services, and what was noticeably absent on the gaming front.
Sony's CES 2011 conference was more prominent for what it didn't reveal than what it did. PSP2 could not be seen anywhere although its existence has been common knowledge for months. Actually the PSP was not even present at the event, barring a few slides of models playing games on the platform.
Also MIA, present at the event was the self styled PlayStation Phone, rumored to be known as the Xperia Play. When Steve Walker, head of marketing of Sony Ericsson, went on stage, he declared that his company was working on the most entertaining smart phones in the world then, although he made the Xperia Arc public, a flashy phone but he did not come up with any dedicated buttons or gaming importance possessed by the Xperia Play.
As for Microsoft's conference, it was all about boasting its products. The Kinect is now a genuine success, selling eight million units all across the world which is three million more than Microsoft's own haughty targets. After one banner year, courtesy the introduction of the Kinect and Xbox 360 Slim, the Xbox 360 got sold in the tune of more than fifty million units worldwide. Xbox Live also made a record surpassing thirty million users.
But if new gaming initiatives are taken into account then Microsoft's briefing was a little disappointing. The company's big reveal of Avatar Kinect got spoiled by a leaked slide earlier in the week. The device looks to be something between the PlayStation Home and Mii Plaza.
