Complacency to be Blamed for Higher Flu Cases in Manitoba

The biggest possible reason behind the high number of flu cases in Manitoba has probably been the ignorance shown by people when it came to the flu vaccine this year. Officials, with the Department of Health, have already admitted that the number of cases related to the flu have been much higher, when compared to the average.

According to the Data available with the Provincial Government of Manitoba, the total affected people from influenza A till the 1st of January were 343. The highest cases were reported from Winnipeg and the Northern Burntwood Health Region.

Prior to this, the numbers were at 86 for influenza A and 38 for influenza B.

Talking about the current situation, the Provincial Medical Officer, Dr. Burnmi Fatoye, informed that the province fared poorly this year, as the number of cases far outnumbered previous statistics. Apart from that, she felt that another possible reason could be that an increased number of people were getting themselves tested for swine flu type symptoms.

Though, she did feel that Manitobians were becoming complacent, when it came to the flu vaccine. The previous in comparison had seen a good turnout among people for vaccinations.

Seniors and babies have been the worst affected this year, with three fatalities being reported from the Garden Hill First Nation.
