EMB to Intensify the Clean Air Programme Nationwide

The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) has decided to take up steps to control the pollution level in the air in the country to curb the pollution problem.

According to the EMB Assistant Director, Mr. Guilbert Gonzales the EMB will intervene and supervise under the Programme to reduce the total suspended particle level in the air by 30%in metro cities like Manila and to improve the air quality in other major urban areas.

The latest MoU agreed to forge with other line Government agencies that would restrict them from fully implementing the Republic Act 8749, or the Clean Air Act of 1999.

Mr. Gonzales told in a report, . "We are focusing in Metro Manila because it is more critical than the other areas in the country." A text brigade campaign will b implemented in Manila to monitor smoke belchers.

The other plans include the shift to environment friendly fuel types using biodiesel and the reduction in fuel sulphur level.

Mr. Gonzales has also suggested coming up with innovative traffic management plans, establishing ambient air quality monitoring network and implementing stricter motor vehicle regulations.

The EMB officials told that enforcing the compliance and monitoring of industrial Companies will certainly widen the scope. Mr. Gonzales added, "There were 2,000 industrial companies that complied with the Clean Air Act which would make a target of 2,200 this year."
