ComScore Study: online video viewership surges in United States

The Americans are going crazy about the online videos and their craze for the videos is surging; that’s what the recent comScore study shows. Released on Wednesday, the comScore study articulates that a record 14.3 billion online videos were watched by the U.S. Internet users in December, 2008, the number was 13 percent up from November, 2008.

According to the comScore study, nearly 150 million users watched online videos, and on average, each single viewer watched 96 videos. Online videos were viewed by about 79 percent of the total U.S. Internet audience. An average viewer spent more than 5 hours watching the videos of average 3.2 minutes, but the Hulu viewers watched the average videos of 10.1 minutes long. 

The study further reveals that Google Web sites that got 100 million online viewers during the month, topped in online video viewership. Google sites attracted 100,092 unique visitors, with each watching 59 videos on average. Google’s YouTube site got big boost in the month; 99 percent of its 5.9 billion videos were viewed from the site. That’s what makes it, number one U.S. online-video property.

News Corp.'s Fox Interactive Media, which attracted 56,895 unique viewers that watched an average of 7.8 videos in December, was ranked at number two by the comScore study. Fox Interactive Media’s 445 million videos were watched in Dec. Yahoo Web sites, which got 42,761 unique visitors, viewing an average of 7.7 videos, were ranked at number three. Launched last year, the joint venture of General Electric Co.'s (GE) NBC Universal and News Corp., Hulu was ranked among comScore's top 10.
