Just a day after the social-networking site MySpace disclosed the names of 90,000 registered sex offenders, the Texas authorities came into action. Yes, on Wednesday, Texas authorities triggered its operation to nab the sex offenders exposed by MySpace.
33-years-old Jesse Clay Scott, the latest of 30 convicted sex offenders, was booked by the Fugitive and Cyber Crimes units of the Texas Attorney General, for allegedly using MySpace in violation of parole conditions.
In a statement, the Texas Attorney General's office said that the Fugitive and Cyber Crimes units have “arrested 4 other people, who used the social-networking site to meet and sexually proposition undercover agents posing as minors under the age of 15”.
According to the Texas authorities, paroled in 2008 after serving 5 and half years in prison for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl, Scott accessed his MySpace account using both his home computer and cell phone.
MySpace stated that it will do anything to keep sex offenders away from the site. In a statement, the MySpace chief security officer, Hemanshu Nigam said, "The safety and security of our users is a top priority for MySpace. We have removed and preserved the MySpace profile of this offender. We employ a best of breed solution that we continue to improve on an ongoing basis in an ever changing environment. We hope that the remaining 29 states, including Texas, quickly pass e-mail registration legislation so that offenders can be punished for providing false information online."
Social-networking sites have recently become hot debatable issue, because these sites are not consider safe for kids as there are many registered sex offenders out there on these sites. Coming to action, MySpace, on Tuesday, banned 90,000 registered sex offenders from the site and handed over their names to the North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper and the Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.
On the other hand, Facebook is yet to disclose its data on sex offenders. Sentinel, the technology provider MySpace applies to detect sex offenders that access its site, alleged that Facebook had 9,000 registered sex offenders on its site this week.
