In California the revolt by the city officials against the proposal made by the Governor Mr. Jerry Brown is spreading all over the state very quickly. The proposal made by the governor was that the agencies of Municipal redevelopment should be abolished. In the past few days there have been several meetings held by the officials of Palm Springs, Long Beach and other cities in order to discuss about the transferring of the billions of dollars from the agencies of municipal redevelopment so that the state cannot have a control over the money.
The officials are trying to provide a barrier in the governor’s proposal to close the redevelopment agencies. Brown’s proposal was to take the money from the agencies and thus allow the state, counties and the school districts to use it for improving the damaged areas. Brown claimed that the proposal if made effective would save about $1.7 billion in next fiscal for the state. This in turn would also allow the school districts to utilize the money effectively. As per records about 5 billion dollars are taken by the redevelopment agencies per year.
In order to block the proposal made by Brown several cities have started claiming the money to lock the future revenue so that Brown does not get the money that he wants. Among those the first one to make its move was Los Angeles. The commissioners of the city’s redevelopment agencies decided on Friday that they should gain control of about 1 billion dollars for nearly 275 projects in the city. These projects include construction of cheap and affordable houses in the neighborhoods which require about 35 million dollars and it also includes contributions towards the art museum of Eli Broad. Among these projects there is also a contribution which is about half million dollars and will be made to the bicycle facility.
The vote still required the approval of the City council. The City Council postponed the vote as there were indications that the officials of Los Angeles were trying to settle for a deal about Brown’s proposal which was yet to be taken up.
