US Senate adjourns negotiations on economic stimulus package

Washington  - In the face of stiff resistance from Republicans, US senators late Thursday adjourned a negotiating session over the 900-billion-dollar stimulus package before the US Senate.

The Democratic majority leader Harry Reid closed down the talks and indicated they would resume on Friday, CNN broadcaster reported.

The Democrats are short of the 60 votes they need to get around procedural barricades that Republicans can put up to block a vote.

The talks were very tough, the CNN correspondent said.

Republicans insist on a reduction of the 900-billion-dollar packet and insist on more money to pay for tax cuts. (dpa)
