A positive fact about healthcare in British Columbia is that the province had carried out the maximum number of organ transplants in the country for 2010. Though, there is a negative point regarding the same thing. Apparently, it also ended up having the worst waiting time in Canada.
The worst part about increased waiting times is that people waiting for a kidney transplant have to undergo haemodialysis quite often. Apparently, the procedure ends up costing the province exchequer an amount of $60,000 a year.
In contrast to the cost of haemodialysis, a transplant surgery costs less than $30,000, which includes the medication as well. The surgery costs an amount of $23,000, while medications amount to $6,000.
According to information released by the Canadian Institute for Health Information, the government will end up saving an amount of $250,000 per patient for a period spanning five-years. The savings will benefit the government if everyone received transplants and the dialysis procedure is stopped.
Meanwhile, data that has been released by BC Transplant has stated that there were 295-organ transplant procedures that were carried out last year. The number had increased from 211 for the year 2009, which had dropped from 266 in 2008.
