Mobile Commerce Going a Long Way

The latest earning report by eBay has put forth fascinating numbers which suggest the role being played by mobile commerce in its business.

The revenue for eBay is said to have reached $9.1 billion for the year 2010 out of which around $3.4 billion came from PayPal transaction fees and $5.7 billion from eBay’s marketplace business.

As much as $2 billion of the $53 billion in merchandise transactions is said to have taken place via mobile. This application available in mobile phones allows the users to buy and sell items on eBay. A recently updated feature also helps the user bar code scan a physical item and then see how much it would cost you on eBay.

In the past year, PayPal is said to have undergone some very noteworthy mobile innovation. These innovations include bumping phones to transfer money, depositing checks by taking a picture of it on your smartphone, and paying for items using PayPal in third-party mobile apps and sites.

eBay says that “mobile payment volume [for PayPal] increased five times compared to 2009”. The Company has however refused to reveal the total revenue number.

Previously Amazon has reported revenue of around than $1 billion per year of products ordered via mobile. Starbucks too is said to have permitted the customers to pay via mobile in the retail stores.
