Movie review: ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’

Based on Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo's popular relationship advice book, 'He's Just Not That Into You' tells you if a guy likes you, he will make the effort to call you. If, he doesn't, he's not interested in you. As simple as that! It goes the other way too, if you are a guy wondering what's going on with a girl who supposedly likes you. The truth is 'If you don't know what's going on, nothing's going on.'

The film doesn't offer profound, breakthrough observations, however, those it provides, makes this long comedy, following the romantic tribulations of a bunch of
30-somethings, surprisingly likable. The film neither soars or flags, but remains pleasantly brisk and engaging throughout.

With a celebrity star cast of famous actresses, who each gets their moment in the sun, from Jennifer Connelly as a control freak, who channels her unconscious anxieties into remodeling a home; Jennifer Aniston plays a properly forlorn woman, just realizing her live-in boyfriend (Ben Affleck) most probably, will never marry her; Drew Barrymore is technology-challenged Mary, struggling to get beyond the relative isolation of a MySpace/Facebook/voicemail-only romance and just gets to spout a couple of good lines; while Scarlett Johansson is the dangerous young thing, so intent on seducing a married man, she incites pity for the married man (Bradley Cooper).

However, of all the actresses it is Ginnifer Goodwin, a television actress who also starred as Johnny Cash's first wife in 'Walk the Line', who is the revelation in 'He's Just Not That Into You'. She may have been bitter and angry in that film, in this one she is completely open, radiant and comically inspired. She is fresh-faced Gigi, a repeat loser in the game of love, who not only gives too much, she talks too much and sits by the phone a lot of the time.

Take it and like it, 'He's Just Not That Into You' is Hollywood taking a stab at making a thoughtful movie about love, something that rarely happens anymore.
