According to recent survey, released by research firm IDC and app platform Appcelerator on Tuesday, most of the mobile software developers are likely to come up with more apps for diverse platforms with increased complexity. The survey of over 2,200 developers found that while most developers are largely hooked to the Apple iOS and Google Android as the key platforms for their apps, Microsoft and Research In Motion (RIM) are apparently making inroads, more so with a horde of tablet offerings on the cards.
Developer intent is considered a significant indicator of a more comprehensive interest in a platform, since consumers are attracted chiefly to devices that are capable of performing specific tasks like checking news or stock prices, tracking locations, among a host of others.
As per the statistics released by the survey, the iPhone – which presently has over 300,000 third-party apps – is the leading platform for as many as 92 percent of developers, with the iPad and the Android-based handsets attracting the attention of almost 87 percent of the developers.
Noting that mobile app developers will apparently expand to other platforms in the near future, Appcelerator’s Scott Schwarzhoff said during an interview: “Cloud connectivity, location and social will define the experiences of most applications this year and going forward. Respondents (of the survey) said ‘last year I was kicking the tires, this year I really am ramping up my efforts’.”
