The US president Mr. Barack Obama, stated that America can win the future and urged Congress to invest in Internet access, high-speed rail and education, and also issued warning that the nation risks being burdened with a massive amount of debt.
While speaking in State of the Union address, Obama emphasized that Americans are coming out of the worst recession since the Great Depression and bringing soldiers home from wars on two fronts. He challenged a divided Congress to put partisanship and divisiveness behind and accomplish the nation’s goals.
Retaining the American dream has never been a very easy task, stated Obama in his sixty two minute long speech to a joint session of Congress. Each generation had to sacrifice, and struggle, and meet the demands of a new age for seeing that through.
Obama also asked lawmakers to make government more receptive and efficient. He came up with a proposal of ceasing of non-defense discretionary spending that would save four hundred billion dollars from the budget over the next ten years and authorized additional cuts of seventy eight billion dollars in the defense budget.
He went on to say that America needs to admit that it spends more than it gets which is not sustainable. Shifting Money
While reducing spending levels, Obama asked that the spending should be used to encourage innovation, improve schools, and build roads, railways and telecommunications networks.
He further stated that the question of whether new jobs and industries will happen in this country, or somewhere else is at stake.
In an address that will set up Obama’s schedule lasting till the 2012 elections, the president stressed on measures that according to him are necessary to speed up the economy. He said Democrats and Republicans should take up the responsibility to administer including taking steps to reduce the budget deficit, which in the last year was a record figure of $1.3 trillion.
