Chances of Cardiac Heart Survival Increase in Public Place: Study

According to a recent report, if cardiac arrest occurs in a public place then it improves the chances of survival.

The chances of survival can increase if there is an automated external defibrillator.

A Cardiologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md, Myron Weisfeldt disclosed that the research depicts that the chances of surviving a cardiac arrest increase when it occurs in a public place like shopping mall, sports arena or airport.

The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The reason behind the result is that 4 out of 5 heart attacks occur in a survivable type of disturbance in cardiac rhythm. On the other hand, those people whose heart stops at home have a higher chance of suffering from an ongoing illness which result in heart failure.

During the research, the scientists studied 14,000 cardiac arrests in men and women. The researchers found that 79% of the respondents who had a heart attack in the community had a disturbance in the cardiac rhythm. This disruption can be cured with the help of an electric shock from an AED device.

These disturbances are called ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation.
