Wi-LAN has come to terms with Motorola units

Wi-LAN Inc has reached terms for both the enterprise and wireless units of Motorola and agreed to pay the firm for using its patent portfolio, the latest in a series of victories for the Canadian patent licensing company.

Both Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions, which got divided into independent companies in this month, managed to get multi-year licenses for Wi-LAN's intellectual property portfolio, in return for fixed cash payments and ended all litigations. The terms of the deal were not revealed.

The deal got settled outside the court and is the fifth such one, in quick succession for Wi-LAN, which will be taking its case to trial starting on Feb. 3.

The company based in Ottawa on 14, Jan stated that it had reached a deal with chipmaker Intel.

A patent expert at the time stated that other defendants would possibly follow suit, and Wi-LAN has since announced deals with chipmakers Atheros and Broadcom, which is set to be acquired by Qualcomm, as well as PC maker Acer.

Wi-LAN said Motorola Mobility was the thirteenth handset manufacturer to pay for a license to Wi-LAN's portfolio, which covers CDMA, WiFi, Bluetooth and DSL technologies.

Wi-LAN shares went up by seven percent since the Intel deal was announced, and were halted at C$6.70 prior to the Motorola news.

Government spending for improving public safety and by retailers helped Motorola Solutions Inc. to come out with strong gains in its fourth-quarter earnings and revenue.

The report did not do any good for the company's share price, because of the Schaumburg-based company's weaker first-quarter earnings guidance. Shares of Motorola Solutions, formerly the Enterprise Mobility Solutions segment of Motorola Inc. before it split earlier this month, closed at thirty eight dollars and fifty eight cents, Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, down 1.7 percent.
