UN Stabilization Force Might be Responsible for Cholera Outbreak in Haiti: Frenc

The total numbers of people affected by the cholera outbreak in Haiti have increased to 209,034, with the epidemic proving to be fatal for 4,030 Haitians. The information was released on Friday by health authorities in the country, which has been reeling under the outbreak since mid-October last year.

According to a bulletin released on Friday, but, dated the 24th of January, 115,238-people have already been cured of the fatal condition. The fatality rate of the epidemic has been stated to be around 1.9%. The province of Artibonite has accounted for the highest number of fatalities, with 857-people falling prey to the virus.

The second largest numbers of deaths have been reported from the province of Quest with 653-fatalities, followed by Nord at 612 and Grand'Anse with 610. All the ten province of the country have suffered from the epidemic and has also spread to the neighbouring country of Dominican Republic.

According to scientists from France, the outbreak has been traced to a unit of soldiers from Nepal who are in the country as part of a UN Stabilization Mission. It is being speculated that the troops dumped their excreta in the river, which was the main source of drinking water for people.
